Obituary for Shirley M. Houren

Shirley Houren, 94, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 16, 2024 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born October 8,1929 to the late Charles Jacob and Edna Anna (Jochim) Ressler in Chicago, Illinois. On July 29, 1950, she married her husband, Robert Charles Houren, with whom she shared 73 wonderful years.

Shirley was a life-long volunteer – from Girl Scout Leader to working in the dietary office at Resurrection Hospital. Her faith-based activities, including crocheting prayer blankets and leading a weekly Rosary group, continued until shortly before her passing.

She is survived by her daughter, Virginia A. (Ginger) Frere (William); granddaughter Jaime L. Rohde (Joshua); great-grandsons Tyler J. Rohde and Nathan P. Rohde; brother, Richard Ressler (Patricia); many nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Charles and Edna; half-brother, Charles T. Ressler; half-sister, Virginia Ressler and sister Dolores Forler (Roy).

Visitation will take place on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 from 9:30am until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 4646 N. Austin Ave., Chicago, IL. Interment private.
