Obituary for Mary C. Hutmacher

Mary C. Hutmacher, age 91, of Des Plaines, Illinois (formerly of Chicago and Rosemont) passed away on May 12, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. Beloved wife of 68 years to the late Joseph. Born May 1, 1931 in Chicago to the late Lawrence and Catherine Fleming, nee Sheppard. Dear older sister of Patricia, Thomas, and the late Lawrence and Joseph. Without question, the joy of Mary’s life was her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Loving mother of Susan (Dan) O’Connell, Karen (late Gary) Fazio, Jill (Robin) Hill, and the late Joseph Hutmacher Jr.,. Proud grandmother of Joe (Dana) Fazio, Danny O’Connell, Jeff (Mallory) Fazio, Meghan (Jim) Wignall, Kellie Fazio, Catherine (Alex) Scott, Timmy O’Connell, and Kimmie Fazio. Affectionately known as GG to eleven great grandchildren: Franklin, Vincent, Elizabeth, Joseph, Conner, Thomas, Taylor, Jonathan, Owen, Carson, and Lenny. Fond aunt of many nieces and nephews. Her love for her family and commitment to all she loved was unsurpassed and an example to the generations of her family who adored her.

A Chicago native, Mary moved with her family to Williamsport, Pennsylvania as a young child. As a teenager, Mary and her family returned to Chicago where she attended Alvernia Catholic High School. While there she began lifelong friendships and met the love of her life. In 1953, Mary and Joe married and began a family on the northwest side of Chicago. Together they enjoyed hosting parties, bowling leagues, and spending time with adored friends and family. In 1965, answering a want ad in the Chicago Tribune led to a once in a lifetime opportunity to work as the executive assistant to Gary Comer, the President of Lands’ End. Mary continued in this role for fifty-plus years where she watched with admiration as the company grew from the little sailing warehouse on Elston Avenue to a world-wide apparel catalog company.

Mary brought the fun wherever she went, whether in the North Center neighborhood of Chicago, her suburban dream home in Rosemont, the Eden House on Fort Myers Beach, exploring cities around the world, or a backyard party. By plane, by boat, by train – you name it, she did it. No matter where she was, time stopped for happy hour and Wheel of Fortune. Mary took the greatest pleasure in spending time with her family and friends. Everyone who knew Mary, from near and far, will remember her fondly with the hope to live by the motto eat, drink, and be Mary!

Memorial Mass will be held Monday, May 23, at 2:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 9711 W Devon Ave, Rosemont, followed by a Memorial Visitation from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Cumberland Chapels, 8300 W Lawrence Ave., Norridge. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Avow Hospice (1095 Whippoorwill Lane Naples, FL) or the American Heart Association.
