Obituary for Marjorie Cheyne

Lt. Colonel Marjorie E. "Midge" Cheyne, nee Payton, of The Salvation Army, age 91, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2024, in Schaumburg, Illinois.

Midge was born on September 27, 1932, in St. Louis, Missouri, the second child of four, born to Salvation Army officers (pastors), Brigadiers Cyril and Phyllis Payton, their only girl.  Midge graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan and entered The Salvation Army Training College in Chicago, Illinois in September of 1950 just prior to her 18th birthday.  She was commissioned as a Salvation Army officer in 1951 and married Captain John R. Cheyne (Jack) the following year.  Together their ministry assignments included corps ministry (pastors) at Chicago (Belmont), Illinois Corps and Flint (Citadel), Michigan Corps, as well as Administrators of the Evangeline Residence in Detroit, Michigan, Adult Rehabilitation Center Directors in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Divisional Leaders in both Chicago and Peoria, Illinois.  Jack and Midge retired from active officership in January of 1988 from the Metropolitan Division but continued to serve in employment positions at the divisional headquarters in Grand Rapids and later as Administrators of the Grand Rapids Adult Rehabilitation Center.  Midge remained in Grand Rapids, following Jack’s Promotion to Glory, for more than 6 years.

Relocating to the Kansas City area in November of 2002, Midge was involved in ministry with her daughter and son-in-law and became a valued member of the Women’s Bible Study at Christ Community Evangelical Free Church in Leawood, Kansas.  She also volunteered at Overland Park Regional Medical Center Hospital in Overland Park,Kansas for some 9 years. Midge later lived near her son and daughter-in-law in The Woodlands, Texas, also involving herself in Women’s Bible Study and worship at The Woodlands United Methodist Church. She loved the Lord, her family, and people she was called to serve in ways that endeared her to many.  Midge will be remembered for her warmth, love and wit even in her final days.  She was grateful for the love and care given to her at the Sunrise Senior Living Facility in Schaumburg, Illinois.
