Obituary for John Cannone

John Cannone, age 91, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2024 at home surrounded by his loving family. John was the beloved husband of Rosa, nee Cacciapaglia, for 63 wonderful years; loving father of Pasquale "Pat" (Debra) and Guerino "Gary" (Rachel Allen) Cannone; dear son of the late Giovanna and Pasquale; cherished Nonno of Michael (Christina) Cannone, Daniella (Thomas Dyke) Cannone, Brandon (Callie Yow) Cannone and Lucia Allen-Cannone; great grandpa of Maddox, Grady, Brooks and Myles; dearest brother of Joseph (Dina) Cannone, Frank (Rosa) Cannone, Matthew (Eleanor) Cannone and fond uncle and  cousin of many.

In 1954, with a steamer chest and only the shirt on his back, John departed Italy on the ship SS Andrea Doria, making his weeklong journey to America across the Atlantic Ocean. . He acclimated quickly to his life in America, learning to speak, read and write English, and become a US citizen. He loved his family, photography, film making, music, gardening and the Chicago Cubs. Together with his loving wife, Rosa they built their life in America, fulfilling their American Dream. As the Patriarch of our family, John assisted in having both sides of the Cannone and Cacciapaglia family emigrate to the United States. John and Rosa’s home was the family gathering spot, with backyard parties or basement gatherings. Here, they had endless gatherings of love, laughter, joy, espresso, parties, food, wine, card playing, loud talking intermittently between the Molese dialect, English, and sprinkled with some actual Italian. Zia’s and Zio’s, cugini, our two Nonna’s, other paisans, and friends… all were welcomed to his home.  He adored his children, grand children, their spouses and his great grandchildren. His memory will live on for eternity. His presence will be missed. Our love for him, will never wain.
