Obituary for David S. Jacobs

David Scott Jacobs, 61, of Chicago, IL passed away peacefully at home on September 29, 2023.

Dave was born on September 14, 1962, in Inglewood, CA to Jean L. Jacobs and the late Edward C. Jacobs.

Dave will be dearly missed by those he loved most in life: his loving wife Sinead; his beautiful children, Megan (Bracken) Rork, Christina (Daniel) Agerter, and their mother Carrie Jacobs; his grandchildren Juliana Rose Agerter and Dominic David Agerter (born October 4, 2023); his mother, Jean Jacobs; his sister Laurie (Chris) Tomaino, along with their two children Kevin and Kimberly; and many extended family members.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Dave was a dedicated Boy Scout and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 1979. He graduated from John Hersey High School, Arlington Heights, Class of 1980, then attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where he received his Bachelor’s in Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management with honors in 1984.

Dave’s second family was, of course, Hyatt Hotels. Hyatt was his career for over 38 years, with 27 years being a General Manager. During that time, he touched many people’s lives at Hyatt Regency Chicago, Hyatt Regency Lexington, Hyatt at University Village, Hyatt Regency Indianapolis, Hyatt Regency O’Hare, Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa, and Hyatt Regency McCormick Place. Among his many accolades and achievements, Dave was awarded Hyatt’s General Manager of the Year in 2004 and was also a nominee for the award in 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2008. In 2015, Dave received the “Ambassador of Hospitality Award” from the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association. Throughout the Hyatt community, he was known as “One of the best in the business.”

There are many people who considered him not only a boss but a friend, mentor, and someone who tried to make everyone feel valued, respected, and inspired. Dave was an active member of the Choose Chicago board of directors and was committed to improving the hotel and tourism industries across Illinois.

Dave cherished spending time at his second home on Big Fish Lake in Michigan. There he relaxed by fishing, boating, and cooking for his friends and family. He was a supporter of the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Bears, and THE Ohio State Buckeyes. Dave was an avid concert-goer and music lover, particularly the Rolling Stones. He could often be found watching and attending NASCAR races. Dave also enjoyed making memories while traveling the world.

Above all, he loved his family and friends and treasured every moment spent with them. He will be greatly missed.

It is not how you leave this world, but how you live your life while you are here.

A Visitation will be held Friday, October 13th from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Cumberland Chapels 8300 Lawrence Ave, Norridge, IL. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, October 14th at 11:00 a.m. at Cumberland Chapels. The interment will be private.
