Obituary for Daniel Fischer

On Saturday, Nov. 26, Dan Fischer passed away at age 43. He was the son of John and Kathy Fischer, grandson of Ruth and Jack Clancy(deceased) and deceased John and Irene Fischer, brother to Scott (Stephanie), had many cousins, and was an honorary uncle & godfather for many. He was a member of the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600 as well as the Motion Pictures Studio Mechanics Local 476. Dan graduated from SIU and began work in the film industry working his way up from a production assistant to becoming a director of photography. His adventurous spirit led him to making films in his much-loved Peru, and those films were shown in film festivals on every continent but Antartica. He was an avid photographer who traveled the world, creating beautiful images on land as well as underwater.

Dan was one of a kind. Being an Eagle Scout, he had a love for the outdoors, wilderness, and nature. He would be the guy you’d want to be stranded with anywhere in the world and his outdoor survival skills would get you through it all. He was an ardent adventurer who traveled to faraway places like Botswana, Komodo Island, Cambodia, Cuba, South Africa, Raja Ampat, most of South America, and so many more. Having spent so much time in the Cayman Islands, he had a love of the ocean. He began scuba diving and eventually became a certified master diver. He left behind so many beautiful underwater photos. He was a passionate gardener with a love for exotic plants. His yard was always an eclectic work in progress. He was a great chef who loved cooking and sharing meals with friends. He was a foodie who loved to try out new restaurants. He had a zest for the bizarre. He will be remembered for his trademark mustache and earned the nickname Bigote amongst many.

It’s hard to describe Dan in one word but the closest you could come to that is KIND. He was a gentle soul with a kind-hearted spirit. He had a positivity that emanated through him. His celebration of life will be Saturday, Dec. 3 at Cumberland Chapels, 8300 W. Lawrence in Norridge, IL, 11:30am - 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to causes that were close to Dan’s heart like sealegacy.org, watertothrive.org, or the family is collecting donations to share with the families that Dan was helping to support in Cusco, Peru.

His life was his art !
