Conley E. Shirley, age 65, beloved husband of Pamela Shirley, passed away on April 24, 2023 at the age of 65 in Chicago, IL. Born in 1957 and raised in Chicago. Loving father of Heather Shirley, Conley Keith (Stephanie) Shirley, and Jordan (Nicole Vanyai) Shirley; Beloved son of Lena Ihle; Fond grandfather of Bode, Lola, and Roan; Dear brother of Teresa (Bruce) Timmcke, Verlan, John, and the late Tim; Fond uncle of Sarah and Elliot.
Conley’s sharp, sardonic and subtle sense of humor mirrored that of the city he loved. No matter where his travels took him, he always said that Chicago was the best city in the world. His extensive collection of clothing, gym shoes, and t-shirts were many telltale qualities for which he will be remembered. As an avid golfer, skier, foodie, music buff and bourbon lover, he reveled in the finer things in life, while equally savoring life’s simplicities, like a proper cup of coffee with real cream.
Conley’s unconventional wit and gift for calling attention to life’s minor inconveniences, no matter how small or mundane, made him endlessly entertaining to his family, friends and colleagues. He could reference a Seinfeld quote for any life situation, and you were forever his friend if you caught the reference. He had an abundance of creativity and a passion for figuring things out, fixing anything and creating masterpieces from nothing, whether it was in the house, the yard or at work. He developed a joy for taking road trips to seek out and acquire very interesting and weirdly unique objects, which he often turned into works of art. He built a remarkable business from one stand, alongside his loyal and dedicated employees and family.
For so many people that didn’t personally know him, Conley’s legacy will be heartfelt childhood memories of iconic Chicago hot dogs and trips to the hardware store with their families. And for those who did know him, his generosity and loyalty will be his legacy. Conley was fiercely loyal to those he loved and his generosity made you feel deeply loved. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for those that were in need of his support. He was a proud father and particularly proud grandfather. Papa Conley (Papa C) loved wrastling and playing superheros with his grandkids. While he had many passions and interests, his greatest love in life was his family.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 30, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Cumberland Chapels at 8300 W. Lawrence Ave Norridge, IL 60706. Interment is private. For more information please call 708-456-8300.
