Obituary for Carl Robert Fredrickson

Bob Fredrickson passed away on October 19, 2022, at the age of 79. Beloved brother to Margaret (the late Marvin) Peterson and John Fredrickson. Precious son to the late Carl and Frances Fredrickson. Cherished uncle to Karen (Christopher) Thielman, Amy Peterson and the late Laura (Brian) Roman. Devoted great-uncle to Joseph Roman and an unforgettable presence in the lives of cousins, friends, and co-workers.
Bob was blind almost from birth and he used his other senses to share his love of music, radio, and sports with those around him. A graduate of Elmhurst College, Bob went on to work at Lutheran General Hospital as an X-Ray developer, followed by Horizons for the Blind as a braille proofreader. He navigated the world with determination and a love for life.
He was a lifelong supporter of Chicago sports teams, particularly the Bears, Blackhawks, and his beloved Cubbies. His patience and dedication were finally rewarded in 2016 when the Cubs finally won that elusive World Series title. He always carried his portable radio so he could listen to the play-by-play, frequently serving as an impromptu announcer to anyone who asked, “What’s the score?”
Bob had an encyclopedic knowledge of music from the Big Band era to the heyday of rock ’n roll. He could quickly name the artist, song, and year by listening to just a few notes of most of these tunes. He shared that love of music with his friends and family and made “mix tapes” long before it was trendy.
He was the emcee of every family party and was always ready with a joke or funny story to brighten your day. He leaves behind so many people he touched with his humor, intelligence, and spirit.
